The importance of feed disinfection


Feed disinfection is a key part of the health, biosecurity or biosafety of an industrial poultry farm. Although feed is one of the main inputs of contaminants to a production complex, many producers are unaware of the high risk of feed transmission, especially in times of severe disease outbreaks. However, many viral pathogens survive for hours and bacterial, fungal, and parasitic agents survive for days and weeks in the unloaded feed consignment inside the barn, causing disease in the bird after entering the production hall.

How do feed disinfectants work?

  • Formaldehyde

Formaldehyde is the smallest member of the aldehyde family with the compound CH2O, which is formed due to incomplete combustion of organic compounds gas and is normally a gas with a pungent odor. The solution of this molecule in water is called formalin, which is used as a disinfectant.
Formaldehyde has the ability to disrupt the structure of proteins, genomic content, cell wall and spores of bacteria and fungi. This ability has made formaldehyde an effective disinfectant against microbial contaminants such as Salmonella, viruses, mold-producing molds and parasites.

Organic acids
Organic acids, or acidifiers, act on microbes by acidifying the environment. Hydrogen ions penetrate into the cell of pathogens and pass through the capsule wall of bacteria, disrupting their protein structures and disrupting their function. Accumulation of hydrogen ions in bacteria such as Salmonella and Escherichia coli also causes more energy to be excreted, which prevents the cell from replicating and damaging activity.

    Plant extracts and essential oils are actually part of the plant’s natural defense system against microbial agents and pests. Terpenes are one of the main components of plant extracts and essential oils. This issue has long been of interest to humans.
